Understanding the CRS Draws

Updated: Aug 12, 2020

When planning to immigrate to Canada, a lot of Express Entry applicants are completely occupied with the CRS (Comprehensive Ranking System) trends because the number drawn (sometimes biweekly) will determine whether or not they get an ITA - Invitation To Apply for Permanent Residence.

The Express Entry system is a pool, created by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), of candidates who may be eligible to apply to immigrate to Canada. It has four streams for economic immigration:

  • Federal Skilled Worker Program

  • Federal Skilled Trades Program

  • Canadian Experience Class

  • Provincial Nominee Program

Find out more about the Express Entry here.

The Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS)

The Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) is the points-based system IRCC uses to assess and score candidates' profiles and rank them in the Express Entry pool.

Candidates gets points based on the information provided in their profile based on:

To be chosen from the pool and invited to apply, applicants need to have one of the highest-ranking scores.

The points you get from the CRS include a core set of points up to 600 and a set of additional points of up to 600. Your total score will be out of 1,200.

Core: Up to 600 points

  1. Skills and experience factors

  2. Spouse or common-law partner factors, such as their language skills and education

  3. Skills transferability, including education and work experience

Additional: Up to 600 points

  1. Canadian degrees, diplomas or certificates

  2. a valid job offer

  3. a nomination from a province or territory

  4. a brother or sister living in Canada who is a citizen or permanent resident

  5. strong French language skills

Core points + Additional points = your total score

How is the specific CRS chosen?

IRCC selects the highest-ranking candidates from the pool and invites them to apply for permanent residence.

Each invitation round has a set of instructions that are:

  • posted online at the time of the invitation round

  • used by the Express Entry system to invite candidates from the pool

The instructions include:

  • the date and time of the invitation round

  • the number of candidates that will get an invitation to apply

  • which immigration program(s) are included in the round (some invitation rounds may only invite candidates for 1 program, for example only from Federal Skilled Trades)

So, for example, the instructions state that the invitation round will be at 03:00hrs on 7th July 2018, and that only 4 candidates will get an ITA from the Federal Skilled Trades.

If there are 10 people in the Express Entry pool at that time with the following scores:

387 325 476 987 235 567 475 478 654 450

Then the CRS drawn (the lowest CRS) will be 478.
