Preparing For Winter

Updated: Aug 13, 2020

Canada is a cold country, where the yearly temperature in provinces like Nunavut averages at −19.7°C (−3.5°F).

We find that many immigrants were apprehensive about moving to Canada because of the weather, especially immigrants who have moved here from warm, tropical environments.

How can you prepare for winter?

Layer Up

If you want to stay warm during winter, the trick is not just to wear the right clothing (a winter jacket and snow boots), but to layer up. Layering up means that you are wearing light clothing that is in close contact with your skin (camisole/vest, blouse/t-shirt, jumper/sweater) and that will help keep your body temperature warm, regulating its temperature. Wearing thermal tights under your jeans/trousers will also help keep you warm.

Warm Up

Drink warm beverages through the day: hot chocolate, tea, or even just warm water. These will keep your insides warm.

Self-Care

Winter can sometimes affect people's moods and mental states. Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is a type of depression related to the change in seasons. SAD usually starts in the fall (September) and continues into the winter months (December to January) until spring (March/April). SAD makes people feel moody, drained and unmotivated.

It is important to take care of yourself and pay attention to cues from your mind and body. If you don't like being out during the winter months, you can leave the house only when you have to (school, work, groceries etc). Do and engage with activities that you enjoy (reading, watching TV, arts & crafts, being with friends/family etc). This will help your mental state during the winter.
