Five Things To Sort Out When You First Arrive

Updated: Aug 13, 2020

Immigrating appears glorious and wonderful until you have finally arrived in your new home and realize that you have a million and ten things to sort out - from housing to a new phone number.

Let's look at five important things to sort out when you first arrive.

SIN

In Canada, your Social Insurance Number is second only to oxygen. It is through this 9-digit number that you are able to open a bank account, get employed and receive benefits.

Go to your nearest Service Canada to get your unique SIN.

Never disclose your SIN to anybody but your employer.

Bank Account

Armed with your SIN, open a bank account for your cash.

Most banks today have handy, secure mobile apps that help you manage your funds with the click of a button.

A credit card will also help you build the much-needed credit history that will enable you apply for loans for buying a car and a house.

New Sim/Phone

It is so important to stay connected, especially with family and friends you left at home. Depending on where you are settling in Canada, prices and services for phone plans differ. Get a plan that works best for you and your family. Customer/sales reps of network providers are always happy to help.

Health card

Healthcare is free in Canada (paid for by the government through taxpayers), except for dental services, medication for people over 25, and some surgeries.

You will need to apply for a health card in order to register with a family doctor. The process for this differs from province to province. In Ontario, you apply for your health card at Service Ontario - note that you'll need proof of address in order to apply.

Home

Getting an apartment, condo or townhouse to call home is important. Kijiji.com is a useful website for finding a home to rent or buy. Some states in Canada offer housing benefits and this is worth considering.

This is not an exhaustive list. Depending on your unique needs, you might find that getting a driving license, or registering for family benefits is far more important for you.
